Trauma occurs when we experience something that threatens our life or sense of safety and leaves us feeling overwhelmed, helpless, and afraid. This can be a result of something you experienced or witnessed, and may have occurred once or on an ongoing basis. In the face of trauma, our minds and bodies make brilliant adaptations, which tend to eventually feel more problematic and isolating than helpful. When unaddressed, trauma can continue to impact us more and more deeply on emotional, physical, interpersonal, and spiritual levels. Many individuals are unsure of what their trauma is, or whether their experience qualifies as trauma. If you feel that you have experienced something which has deeply impacted your sense of safety and your view of yourself and the world, your experience is valid and your reactions and symptoms probably make perfect sense.

While talk therapy can be incredibly helpful in processing trauma, some individuals find that talking doesn’t quite get to the root of their pain. Using Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, I integrate talk therapy with evidence-based somatic and mindfulness techniques. We can process your traumatic experiences with as much or as little talking as is beneficial to you. In this space, we will continue to slow down and notice what happens for you physically as you discuss your experiences and their impact. Through this somatic approach, we honor your body’s story, needs, and wisdom. This work will always be done at your pace, a process which can be healing in itself. Ultimately, we may notice and follow physical sensations, allowing you to tend to and transform stored traumatic reactions. This can support you in cultivating a sense of safety in yourself and in the world. I know that this work is deeply personal and I consider it an honor to walk alongside clients in this way.
